Anonymous asked: If I batted my eyelashes and asked nicely, would you do art critiques?
Maybe? I’m not really the best at critiques unless there’s something really obvious that needs fixing, and even then I like to know who I’m talking to so I know how to word my critique! Some people take it differently than others and I don’t like to get into fights on the internet.
Sfé made a couple of Star Warsfan characters and, being a person who likes Star Wars, I wanted to make some too! Now they are all friends!
Tof (the gran) and Seadol (the dug) are childhood friends, despite the gran’s systematic persecution of the dug species since they colonized the dug’s homeworld of Malastare. They have a ship called the Kartah IV, and they operate a totally legal and above board shipping and courier service for anyone who wants to hire them to ship stuff from point A to point B. Seadol acts as the pilot and ship mechanic while Tof does all the talking, which works out pretty well because Seadol has a really bad temper and if she’s left alone with strangers a fight will usually break out.
Sfé’s characters, Meila and Uri, have been hired aboard the crew of the Kartah IV to help with shipments and also so they can lay low as Meila is kind of on the run from the Empire since it turns out you can’t really just “quit” being an Imperial spy and run off with a squeeze that’s also a Rebel sympathizer.
As a continuation to the last reblog, here’s a really interesting PBS short about Fanfic and Fanart. The part about Adventure Time is especially interesting and inspiring.
Although I still don’t agree with people selling fanart, especially of the “put two things together like it’s hilarious” school of fanart and then sell it on a shirt. I find that to be just lazy, but that’s my opinion!
I spent the morning un-following a bunch of very talented people on Tumblr.
That feels like a really weird thing to say. And it is.
It was nearly a dozen different artists in all, and they were all extremely talented. Part of what moved me to Follow them in the first place was their skill. In…
I agree with this so much. I watch many different people of varying skill level and focus, but the defining thread is that they produce original work and have original stories in their heads. I like young artists a lot for this reason; sometimes the stories aren’t the best but the feeling and brain power behind them is there.
Fanartists can do incredible work too, but as a consumer of art it’s as significant as the difference between eating a meal and eating someone else’s vomit.
So fanart is vomit? Jesus christ. Is that necessary? I have a lot of respect for you but this really sours that. You can word your opinion in a way that doesn’t just shit all over others.
Maybe if people showed the slightest interest in any original art I’d done ever in the degree they fall over my fanart, I’d give a shit about sharing my original art. If people value original art so much as to call derivative art vomit, why doesn’t that value show at all???
People don’t share their art online like it’s a business, especially on Tumblr. You’re not a “consumer”. They don’t owe you anything. They share fanart because it’s what they have fun with and they enjoy being a part of a community that cares about it. Let them draw whatever they want and what makes them happy and if you don’t like it, then fine, don’t watch them! Who cares, honestly. Geez.
At the risk of getting my head lopped off, I’m going to stick my neck out here.
I agree with aterriblethought. There seems to be a disturbing trend of big-time artists shitting on fanartists or casual artists. My only question is: why does it matter to you? Does so-and-so drawing Sherlock slash art on Tumblr really effect you in any way, besides being annoying on your dash? You don’t like it, unfollow them. There’s honestly no need to write big, involved essays about why those people are lesser artists and not worthy of your attention - and on Tumblr of all places. Seriously? This is as casual as blogging gets. Most people (myself included) got Tumblrs just so they would have a place to dump fanart so it wouldn’t flood our main sites.
It doesn’t make you seem bigger or more important to call fanart “social waste” and “vomit.” It just makes you look like the jerk standing at the party screaming “STOP HAVING FUN.” Which, bee tea dubs, is the reason people draw fanart. Because it’s fun. And more often than not, being bitter and spiteful about it is only alienating people that would otherwise be fans of your work.
There is no automatic demotion for artists who dare to draw copyrighted material. People are going to draw whatever they want. Getting worked up over it not being up to your standards is a waste of energy.
To get it out of the way: Nobody called Fanart “social waste.” That is the name of the blog! :)
If you don’t want to sell your fanart and are doing it because it is fun and you like the attention, then keep doing it! It’s your time and energy, use it however you want! But some people will have opinions about that, just as people have opinions about everything.
But if you are selling and making a living off of fanart not only is that super unethical but it is illegal! Don’t do it! If you want to make a living off of your art, do original stuff. That is my opinion.
Sfé Monster and I really enjoyed the Avengers and I think we have something really special going on. Sfé, let’s go take AO3 and Fanfiction.net BY STORM.
