Anonymous asked: Can I use your idea of skin deep (and characters when necessary) to create my own story-line? I've had the idea in my head for a while and have wanted to do a web comic FOREVER!

I’m assuming you’re talking about a fan comic! I’ve gotten this question a few times over the year and my answer is always the same: as long as you’re not trying to make money off it I can’t stop you from drawing what you want to draw! But I would suggest against making fan comics of any sort because:

• Comics are a LOT of work. Unless you are happy with the idea of putting a lot of work into something you can’t ever do anything professional with (selling books, merchandise, etc), I would suggest developing your own ideas and concepts, something you can really call your own! Fan-stuff has a built-in audience which makes it easier to find readers, but at the end of the day, cultivating your own following is a lot more satisfying (for me, at least!) and if you find out you really like doing it, you can make a little bit of money off of it through advertising or merchandise or what-have you. Doing that with a fancomic is both illegal and pretty skeezy!

So I suppose if you just want to do something for fun and for your friends, I can’t stop you, and have fun! But if you want to do a serious production that will involve a LOT of time and effort on your part, I think you’ll find it more fulfilling if you spend all that time and energy on your own work!

I hope that makes sense?
